My Story

First Step supports families of babies and young children with special needs and/or disabilities who often arrive at First Step in crisis and not knowing which way to turn. Established 35 years ago, First Step provides a specialist, safe secure and non-judgemental environment where families are supported and empowered to navigate what can often be a long and difficult journey ahead.

First Step supported me and my son when he was diagnosed at just 3 months old with a rare genetic condition called Williams Syndrome. From lifesaving open heart surgery at 6 months old, to all the other invasive medical interventions and navigating his learning difficulties and cognitive delay, First Step has held our hand through it all. They supported us on this path into SEN parenting and we are ever grateful for their guidance. I'm honoured to run for them and give back to this amazing charity that is a lifeline for families like ours.
